What to do in Abidjan, Ivory Coast

In my two previous posts, I told you about the huge basilica in Yamoussoukro and the unique guesthouse Quai 40. Today I’m wrapping up my journey to Ivory Coast with a collection of places to see if you spend one day in Abidjan.

ADMIRE THE ARCHITECTURE OF SAINT-PAUL’S CATHEDRAL

Saint-Paul’s cathedral construction was done on the initiative of the first president of Ivory Coast, Félix Houphouët-Boigny. It was completed in 1985 in the Plateau district. The edifice overlooks the laguna with at its front a massive sculpture which looks like an archdiocese spreading his arms.

GET INSIDE THE SPOOKY PYRAMIDE

The Pyramide is a high building which opened in the early 70’s and was fated to be a major sight in the city. But nowadays it is not the first place that comes to mind for a visit of Abidjan. Why? Simply because it was left deteriorating since the 90’s.

On the ground floor two worn out staircases lead to the 1st floor composed of former offices. The rest of the 14 floors can also be accessed via other stairs. Where no windows protect the floor, nature has even claimed its place back. But I hope the renovating plans announced in 2011 will eventually materialize.

RAMBLE THROUGH THE MARKET OF ADJAME

It’s so chaotic that our driver spent 45 minutes finding a place to park. But Adjamé market is the place to visit, whether you need to buy colorful Pagne fabric or local big snails. Or simply get a vibe of the Abidjanese way of living.

ENJOY DELICIOUS FOOD IN A MAQUIS

Maquis are casual restaurants in West Africa. My favorite place during my stay was Chez Ambroise. With your feet in the sand and a beer in one hand, you can enjoy amazing lobsters with alloco (plantain banana). For the most adventurous among you, why not order the snails you saw at the market: once cooked, they become very chewy and leave an earthy taste in the mouth.

CHILL REGGAE-STYLE

It does not really matter if you’re fond of reggae music or now. Parker Place in Marcory is still a great place to enjoy drinks sitting with friends. Their live performers are really good.
